A noncontact infrared thermometer is an affordable and effective tool for measuring a person's temperature from a distance.

What are the different types of thermometer?

  • Digital thermometers. Digital thermometers are regarded as the fastest and most accurate type of thermometer. ...

  • Electronic ear thermometers. ...

  • Forehead thermometers. ...

  • Plastic strip thermometers. ...

  • Pacifier thermometer. ...

  • Glass and mercury thermometers.

Infrared thermometers are temperature sensing devices that use electromagnetic radiation to make non-contact surface temperature readings. This allows for fast, touchless measurements from a safe distance

When using a noncontact infrared thermometer, how and where it is used may affect the measurement.

  • Head coverings, the ambient environment and the reading location on the forehead can all affect results.

  • Best practice is to leave your thermometer in the testing environment for at least 10 minutes prior to use so it can adjust to the environment.

  • It should be free of air drafts, out of direct sunlight and away from radiant heat sources.

  • Make sure the subject is ready to be tested by making sure that the test area of the forehead is clean, dry and unobstructed.

  • Verify that the temperature of the person's forehead has not been influenced by wearing excessive clothing or head covers, or by using facial cleansing products like cosmetic wipes.

  • Any outside influence on a person's forehead temperature prior to testing will skew your measurements when taking measurements.

  • The measurement distance from the subject is different for every infrared thermometer.

  • To correctly take a measurement, place your forehead perpendicular to the the device.

  • Do not talk or move body during measurement.

  • If outdoors, make sure the device and the subject is out of direct sunlight. Failure to do so will also result in incorrect readings.
